Gorres training hard for fight vs Darchinyan

Sun.Star: CEBU CITY - Boxing fans will see a different and more focused Z “The Dream" Gorres when he faces Vic “Raging Bull" Darchinyan in their upcoming International Boxing Federation super flyweight eliminator bout on Feb. 2 at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City. Unlike in his unanimous decision loss to Mexican Fernando Montiel, Gorres is more prepared and comes with a battle plan tailored against Darchinyan. “Everything we have done for the past weeks have been part of our battle plan against Darchinyan," ALA Gym chief trainer Edito Villamor told Sun.Star after their training. Gorres sparred for 10 rounds Thursday with three fighters all in different weight categories as part of the plan to improve his strength, speed and agility at the ALA gym. The Gorres camp has also studied Darchinyan’s previous fights and also received tips from Nonito Donaire Sr., the father and trainer of International Boxing Federation and International Boxing Organization flyweight title holder Nonito “Filipino Flash" Donaire Jr. It was the younger Donaire who gave Darchinyan his first career loss. “We have been closely studying the previous fights of Darchinyan with Frederico Catubay, Glen Donaire and we are asking for a copy of his fight against Diosdado Gabi," said ALA gym chief trainer Edito “Ala" Villamor during an interview after Gorres’ sparring session at their gym. Villamor also said Gorres’ preparation is more intense and comprehensive than his build up for the Fernando Montiel title fight last year. Gorres is again hungry for a title bout and eyes Darchinyan as his stepping stone for a shot at the IBF super flyweight belt, which is currently held by Russian warrior Dmitri Kirilov. The winner of this eliminator will face the IBF champion. “This is a very important fight for me. This is the second biggest fight of my career next to Montiel’s. This fight will serve as a stepping stone for me to be back on the championship race," said Gorres in an interview with Sun.Star. Darchinyan, who has also defeated Glenn, Catubay, and Diosdado Gabi, has also announced that he will knock Gorres out in their bout. Gorres is unfazed. “That’s what Montiel said too, he said he was going to knock me out but he failed. I’m not scared of Darchinyan. I respect him. I don’t want to talk a lot. Let’s just wait and see when we step in the ring and he’ll see what I’m really made of," said Gorres.
