Everton goalie makes rare feat in losing effort to Bolton

Preventing the opposing team from scoring is a goalkeepers job. But during a Premier League match between English Football clubs Bolton and Everton, Blues keeper Tim Howard made a rare feat when he momentarily turned into a striker. The 32-year-old US national team mainstay received an assist from French teammate Sylvain Distin and kicked the ball hard from the edge of his own box that sailed some 80 yards from the field and bounced over Bolton keeper Adam Bogdan and straight to the visitors' goal. David Bingham, the keeper of US Major League Soccer team San Jose Earthquakes, also did the trick last year. Howard's 63rd-minute goal broke a scoreless deadlock but his effort failed to stop his team drop a 2-1 decision against the Wanderers. Bolton striker David Ngog quickly booted the game-tying goal four minutes later, beating Howard inside the penalty area. Bolton defender Gary Cahill, receiving a pass from teammate Chris Eagles, then pushed the visiting team ahead in the 78th minute scoring the goal almost at the same spot where Ngog scored the equalizer. Howard now joins a long list of international keepers who scored a goal in a match. Rogério Ceni of football powerhouse Brazil holds the record of most goals scored by a goalkeeper with 103 while Paraguay's José Luis Chilavert became the only keeper to complete a hat trick in a single game. South Korean Jung Sung-Ryong and Sinan Bolat were the only Asian players in the list, dominated mostly by Europeans and players from South American countries. Another rare move also took place last December in a Hong Kong First Division League match, where Citizen AA's Festus Baise of Nigeria used a scorpion kick in attempting to clear an offensive strike by a member of rival team Sun Hei. His aim of deflecting the ball, though, looped high above his goalkeeper teammate as he scored an own goal for the opposing squad. — JVP, GMA News
