Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane's side fought back from an early three-goal deficit to beat BSY Young Boys and Friends 8-6 at the 11th Match Against Poverty, played in front of 21,000 fans at the Stade de Suisse in Bern, Switzerland, Tuesday (early Wednesday, PHL time).

The real match winners, however, are the super typhoon Yolanda survivors who will benefit from two-thirds of the match’s profits.

"Although [Ronaldo and Zidane's team] scored eight and the Bern team Young Boys scored six, it was really the Philippines that scored 14 because both sides were playing for them,” United Nations Development Programme Partnerships Manager Aziyade Poltier,  organizer of the annual Match Against Poverty, said through a press release on Wednesday.

Ronaldo and Zidane were joined by other football icons such as Luis Figo, Fabio Cannavaro, and Patrick Vieira. Brazilian female football legend, five-time FIFA Female World Player of the Year awardee and UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Marta Vieira da Silva also joined the UNDP team.

The documentary film "The Football Wonder of Tacloban" aired during the match's halftime intermission. It will be launched in the Philippines at a media event on Thursday. - Roehl Niño Bautista, GMA News
