Filipinas yield to Myanmar on late penalty kick to begin Cambodia SEA Games stint

The Philippine women's football team was dealt a tough way to begin its 32nd SEA Games campaign, bowing to Myanmar, 1-0, at the Army Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on Wednesday night.

Both teams were goalless for almost the entirety of the match until the opposing team scored a late penalty kick with Win Theaw Thaw nailing the lone goal of the night at the 89th minute.

The loss saw the Filipinas fall to Myanmar just a year after defeating the latter to win the 31st SEA Games bronze medal in Hanoi, Vietnam last year.

The Philippines is now at 0-0-1 in Group A while defending champion Vietnam and Myanmar come in at first and second seed with similar 1-0-0 cards. The Filipinas, who are bound for the 2023 FIFA World Cup in July, will look to bounce back on Saturday, May 6, against Malaysia at 9 p.m. (Manila time).
