Marcos lauds Filipinas over historic first win in World Cup

KUALA LUMPUR - President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Wednesday hailed the Philippine women’s football team over their first victory at the 2023 FIFA World Cup.

“Congratulations to our Philippine Women’s National Football Team on their historic triumph against New Zealand at the FIFA Women's World Cup! A momentous first-ever world cup win for the Philippines!” Marcos said in a tweet.

The Filipinas made a historic win after defeating New Zealand, 1-0, in the game held in Wellington, New Zealand.

New Zealand was not able to score a single goal with Philippine goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel showing relentless defense at the course of the game.

Further, striker Sarina Bolden converted a header off a cross from Sarah Eggesvik in the free kick play at the 24th minute to put Manila up, 1-0.

The Philippine team is set to face Norway on Sunday with the aim to advance to the Round of 16. —KG, GMA Integrated News
