Philippines falls to Malaysia, misses ASEAN Championship semifinals

The Philippines fell to Malaysia, 1-0, in its final group stage match of the ASEAN Championship on Saturday in Kuala Lumpur, missing out on the semifinals of the regional tournament.

An early goal from G. Pavithran in the 16th minute—his first international goal—proved enough to send Malaysia through to the knockout stage.

Malaysia also dominated possession, 59%-41%, and recorded more blocked shots, 3-1.

The Philippines finished its campaign with one win, a 4-1 victory over Laos, and three losses to Myanmar (4-1), Thailand (1-0), and Malaysia.

Singapore will face Thailand in the semifinals, while Malaysia will take on Vietnam.
