Asian Games: Karateka Marie June Adriano clinches bronze medal in women's individual kumite

Young karateka Marie June Adriano powered past Ya-chi Chung of Chinese Taipei to clinch a bronze medal in the 2026 Asian Games women's kumite -50kg on Wednesday at the Toyohashi Gymnasium in Japan.

The 22-year-old Adriano pulled off a 10-3 victory in their bronze medal bout, delivering the country's fifth overall medal and second from karate.

On Tuesday, the squad bannered by Samantha Veguillas, Ysabielle Arrogante, and Rebecca Torres also captured a bronze in the women's kata team event.

Adriano scored 10 Yuko throughout the bout while Ching only managed one Ippon as the Filipina surged to the bronze.

On the way to the podium, Adriano pulled off a 4-3 win over Srey Phea of Cambodia in the Round of 16 before blanking South Korea's Yewon Yang in the quarterfinals.

But Adriano narrowly fell to Yee Ting Tsang of Hong Kong in the semifinals, 4-5, to drop to the battle for bronze.
