Golf: Clavecilla looking for a comeback in the Philippine Senior Amateur Championship

Newly appointed commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission Iggy Clavecilla will try to reclaim the title he lost last year in the Philippine Senior Amateur Championship, slated to fire off at the Camp Aguinaldo Golf Club on Wednesday.                          Pepot Inigo rallied in the final round to complete a come-from-behind win over Mari Hechanova at Riviera, thus, ending the five-year supremacy of Clavevilla in the 54-hole event by the National Golf Association of the Philippines (NGAP).                          But Clavecilla, the Ateneo Golf Foundation president who replaced Joaquin Loyzaga at the PSC, is hellbent on a return to the winning road in the centerpiece Open Division at the tight fairways of the Aguinaldo layout.                          Of course, Inigo, Hechanova and former national champions Francis Gaston and Rolly Viray, and Lino Magpantay are expected to battle Clavecilla for the top spot. Spicing up the event is the first Mid-Amateur division featuring players from the 30-54 age bracket with the Open category set over 54 holes and the Classes A (handicap 5-10) and B (10.1-16) to be played over 36 holes. Also on tap are the age-group competitions set over 36 holes in the first and third day, including Category I (55-59), Category II (60-64), Category III (65-60), Super Senior I (70-74), Super Senior II (75-79) and Super Senior III (80 and above).   Meanwhile, former President Fidel V. Ramos and Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin will formally open the Seniors tilt via a ceremonial tee-off before the tournament proper blasts off.           Also invited to grace the opening are Defense ASEC for Comptrollership Ernesto Boac, Chief of Staff Gen. Jessie Dellosa and NGAP chairman Rod Feliciano. - AMD, GMA News
