Rugby: PHL Volcanoes stand tall after first World Cup Sevens

The Philippine Volcanoes completed the pool stage first-ever World Cup Sevens competition on Saturday with back to back losses against Samoa and Zimbabwe.

Far down in the world rankings at 57th, the Volcanoes held a gallant stand against world number nine Samoa earlier in the day, losing 29-0. The Philippines then rounded-up Group C action with a match against Zimbabwe, who hold the 31st spot in the rankings.

Oli Saunders scored on a try and a conversion for the Philippines in the first half, but it was all Zimbabwe from then on for a 19-7 scoreline.

The Philippines were defeated by world number 37 Kenya on Friday, 45-5.

In the Bowl quarterfinals, the Philippines bowed down to regional neighbors Japan in a 50-0 shutout. The Japanese were able to reach the Bowl finals after narrowly defeating Georgia, 24-21, in the semis, but they eventually fell to hosts Russia 29-5. - AMD, GMA News
