Golf: PHL juniors contingent dominates Veritas World Junior tourney
After an unimpressive showing in the Junior World Championship, Sean Granada and four other Filipino junior golfers were victorious in the 2013 Veritas World Junior Golf Tournament held at the Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena, California, Thursday (Friday, PHL time).
Granada scored a huge winning margin of 20 strokes, as he posted rounds of 32, 28 and 29 for an 89 total on a shortened par-37 course designed for the eight-year-old boys’ bracket. He had an outstanding week as he already led by 14 at the end of 36 holes.
Gavin McCormick settled for runner up with 109.
Jed Dy, despite being down three at the start of the final round, carded a three-under-par 69 to complete a come-from-behind win in the boys’ ninw-year-old division. He wound up with a 214, two ahead off Landon Elliot’s 74 for 216.
Vince Tiamsik prevailed in the boys’ six-year-old category by two. His 100 (35-33-32) was good enough for the crown, beating out Nigel Epperson’s 102 (36-36-30).
Annyka Cayabyab made triple 74s for 222 for an easy romp in the girls nine-year-old division. Michelle Chang of the US was second with 236 (79-78-79).
The Filipino winners were part of the contingent sent in by the Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines (JGFP).
The four-division romp also comes a week after Kristoffer Arevalo and Paulina del Rosario won their divisions in the 13-14 years age-group and the duo of Princess Superal/Daniella Uy won the girls team event in the prestigious Callaway Junior World championships in San Diego, California. - AMD, GMA News
