The Philippine national men's rugby team, also known as the Volcanoes, placed first in the Plate Division of the Thailand HSBC Asian Sevens Series last week.
The Volcanoes had previously lost to Korea in the quarterfinals of the tourney's Cup Division. However, the team rebounded strongly from the setback, besting Kazakhstan 14-10 in the semis, before winning a 22-14 affair against the hosts Thailand in the final.
“Although some of our top players were unavailable due to commitments in Japan, the team that attended Thailand showed that we can win at the Asian Championships.” said Volcanoes coach, Matt Cullen.
Still, the team is not content with their achievements, and is already looking forward to the next two legs of the series, Mumbai in October, and Singapore in November. More strong finishes will give the squad some momentum heading into next year's Asian Games in Korea. - AMD, GMA News
