Baguio — There is only one thing in the minds of the Mizuno Superstars players this week: redemption.
After losing out to Forest Hills last year on an unintentional infraction by one of its members, Mizuno Superstars is hellbent on erasing that bad memory by earning a victory at the Fil Championship division of the 64th San Miguel Fil-Am Men’s Golf Tournament.
“I believe we can reclaim the title this year,” said Mizuno Superstars, winner in 2011, manager Lovell Gopez. “We just have to erase the past and look ahead.”
One thing going for Gopez’s wards is that his players have been working on their game in the last weeks leading up to the Fil-Am.
“They’re shooting steady and raring to go,” also said Gopez, who will be leaning on the services of Raymond Sangil, Ace Stehmeier, King Stehmeier, Rodel Mangulabnan and amateur ace Justin Limjap.
Forest Hills, which is aiming for back-to-back successes, will parade Gabriel Atienza, Raffy Garcia, Ronald Littaua, JM Garcia, and Peter Young.
Aside from Forest Hills and Mizuno, other teams in contention in the Fil-Championship are Team Sparta, Silicon Valley Golfers Link 1, Darwin Golf Club Australia, Camp John Hay, Team Alaska and many-time titlist Manila Southwoods.
In the Am Championship, a new winner will be known as Matikas 83 is not defending its title.
Gopez’s Mizuno All Stars squad, with Bones Floro and Raymond Bunquin in the lead, is one of the best bets to succeed Matikas 83. The other members are former Orchard Golf club champion Tonito Payumo, Denden de Castro and Joaquin Tolentino.
Northwoods Pacsports though, with a total team handicap of 3.93, heads the list in the second premiere division. Richard Joson, Nicholas Santiano, Dennis Gonzales, Von Sarmiento, Masakazu Saso and Bernard Joson make up the team.
Also expected to figure for the plum are Batangas Barakos, Camp Aguinaldo, Villa Cacho, Dugong Bughaw, Che’Lus, and Forest Hills.
Meanwhile, Flights A to C in the Fil and Am division start their own bids Monday in the event which has San Miguel as title sponsor and Toyota as presenter. - AMD, GMA News
