Golf: Mizuno Superstars surge ahead seven, with Team Sparta in second place

Baguio — Mizuno Superstars moved into attack mode Wednesday to extend its lead to seven, although it saw a new challenger in Team Sparta, in the Fil Championship division at the midway mark of the 64th San Miguel Fil-Am Men’s Invitational golf tournament at the Baguio Country Club.
Mizuno assembled 119 in Molave points despite the slow putting surface of BCC to gain a two-day total of 242. Ace Stehmeier was the steadiest with a 34 and was supported by King Stehmeier’s 30, Rodel Mangulabnan’s 29, and Justin Limjap’s 26. Ray Sangil did not count with his 25.
Team Sparta, winner in the Am Championship division last year and elevated to the premiere Fil category, pooled in 235 after a 118 as the teams take a one-day rest tomorrow before heading to the Camp John Hay Golf Club for the final two rounds.
“I am certain guns will be blazing on Friday,” said Mizuno skipper Stehmeier.
Tonton Asistio carded 35 points, Erwin Temena added a 31, and Rading Decepida and Alex Ignacio each scored 26 points for Team Sparta.
“The boys are enjoying the game and bonding perfectly and that’s what’s important for us,” said Team Sparta skipper Allan Pasion.
Gabriel Atienza went 10-over for 26 points after churning out an impressive two-under 38 for Forest Hills Tuesday, while Edgar Lee shot 28 points and Ronald Littaua also had a 26 and Miguel Garcia added a 23.
Manila Southwoods improved with a 111 after a 107 but remained too far behind at fourth with 218 in the event sponsored by San Miguel and presented by Toyota. - AMD, GMA News
