Golf: Thailand’s Supamas Sangchan looking for repeat win at PHL Ladies Open
Thailand’s Supamas Sangchan aims for back-to-back titles in the Philippine Ladies Open, which starts Wednesday at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Antipolo City.
Supamas took home the crown in Batangas the past year after she rallied and survived a grueling six-hole playoff with then-amateur Dottie Ardina.
This time though, a tough competition looks to be in the books as top amateur Princess Superal of Team ICTSI is out to foil the Thai’s goal.
Superal, still on a high after winning the gold medal in the recent Myanmar Southeast Asian Games, promises to bring back the crown to Philippine soil.
“It is going to be tough. I need to step up and keep up with the foreigners if I hope to win this week,” Superal said.
The other Thai ladies are Sukapan Budsabakorn and Pannarat Thanapolboonyaras.
Michelle Koh Lay Sia, Diane Luke and Nur Durriyah Bintin Damian banner the Malaysian side.
Sock Hwee Koh and Amelia Wei Ping Yong lead Singapore in the event, which drew 85 players, including Fil-Austrian Ester Beatriz Fasol.
Aside from the Thais, Superal will also have to contend with the local charge featuring Pauline del Rosario, Abby Arevalo, and Mika Fortuna among others.
Tipped to crowd the top spot are Samantha Martirez, Sam Green and Bernice Olivarez-Ilas in the 54-hole championship. - AMD, GMA News
