Tennis: PHL's Tierro drops Davis Cup opener against Sri Lanka 


PJ Tierro suffered a five-set loss against Harshana Godamanna on Friday, 6-3 6-7(8) 4-6 6-2 6-3, in the opening match of the Philippines' first round series against Sri Lanka in the 2014 Davis Cup Group II Asia/Oceania competition in Colombo. 
 
Godamanna battled from being down two sets to one, winning the last two sets to the delight of the home crowd. The 28-year-old currently serves as an assistant coach to the women's tennis team of University of Massachusetts - Boston. He has appeared 72 times for Sri Lanka in the Davis Cup, winning an impressive 55 matches.
 
It is Tierro's first match back since 2009. His losing streak in the competition now stretches to five straight games. His last win was a 6-3 6-1 result against Ali Ghareeb of Kuwait in 2007.
 
Still scheduled to see action are Ruben Gonzales, Johnny Arcilla and Treat Huey for the Philippines. - Renee Fopalan / AMD, GMA News
