Pinoy Olympic figure skater Martinez feted in Muntinlupa City
After bringing honor to the Philippines in the Sochi Winter Olympics, figure skater Michael Martinez was feted in Muntinlupa City on Monday.
Martinez, accompanied by his mother, attended the city government's flag-raising ceremony where he was honored for his talent, GMA News TV's "News to Go" reported.
The figure skater was also given P200,000 and is now considered an adopted son of the city.
Last February, the Muntinlupa City government said it was preparing a hero's welcome for Martinez, who finished 19th in the figure skating event in the Sochi Winter Olympics.
"He is first and foremost a Muntinlupeño and our City is proud of him ... We are very privileged to have an Olympian in our midst, and young as he is, he is an inspiration to us all that indeed, dreams are still possible," Muntinlupa City Mayor Jaime Fresnedi was quoted in a Philippines News Agency report.
Aside from the Sochi Olympics, Martinez brought further honor to the Philippines when he bagged the gold in the Triglav trophy international figure-skating competition in Jessenice, Slovenia.
Martinez, 17, hopes to return to the Olympics in the 2018 South Korea Games. - Joel Locsin / AMD, GMA News
