Philippine Normal U teams with Indonesian school for PhDs in PE

The Philippine Normal University is teaming up with Indonesia's Universitas Negeri Jakarta to enable 30 Filipino PE teachers, fitness practitioners and sports professionals to earn their doctor of sports education degree and later build the country's first doctoral programs in physical education and sports.

In an interview with GMA News Online during the 3rd National Conference on Sport Pedagogy over the weekend, PNU Professor Lordinio Vergara said the program will start in summer 2015. Tuition and fees will run up to at least P70,000 to P80,000 over two years.

Vergara said PNU President Ester B. Ogena pushed for the program to enable  PNU and other Philippine universities and colleges to design and run their own PE doctoral programs.

Fourteen PNU students/faculty and sixteen others not from PNU will comprise the program's pioneer batch of students.

Vergara said the Philippines has only three Filipino educators with doctorates in PE, but all of them have retired.

He also said the country has masteral programs in physical education and in sports science, but no doctoral courses because there are not enough local experts.

The Commission on Higher Education requires that a university or college must have at least three doctoral degree holders in PE to run a doctoral  program.
