Michael Martinez withdraws from South Korea skating tilt due to injuries
Filipino Olympian figure skater Michael Christian Martinez withdrew from the Four Continents Championships in South Korea due to injuries he sustained while preparing for the competition.
"Dear friends- thanks for all your well-wishes but I withdrew in 4CC, I injured my hip & ankle during training," the 18-year-old skater posted in his Facebook page.
The 4CC, which will be held in Seoul from February 10 to 15, is an annual competition founded by the International Skating Union in 1999. Skaters from the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania participate in the tilt.
Ranked 29th in the world for men's singles, Martinez became the only Filipino to qualify and participate in the Sochi Winter Olympics held in Russia last year. He finished 19th overall, but made history as the first Filipino to complete in Olympic figure skating. — Marisse Panaligan/JST, GMA News
