Caleb Stuart made a new Southeast Asian Games record in hammer throw as he won the eighth gold medal for the Philippines on Tuesday at the 28th Sea Games in Singapore.

The Filipino-American threw 65.63 meters in the final, breaking the 62.23-meter record that Thailand's Tantipong Phetchaiya set in Myanmar in 2013.

Phetchaiya settled for silver with a season-best 62.12 throw, while Malaysia's Jackie Wong took the bronze throwing 61.18.

Another Filipino thrower, Arniel Ferrera, almost made the podium with a season-best 60.08 throw for a fourth place finish.

Stuart's medal also marks the first gold of the country in athletics in the 2015 SEA Games.

Other medalists for the day so far are Hermie Macaranas, who bagged two more bronze medals for the country in the men's canoeing single-200m and the men's canoeing double-200m with partner Ojay Fuentes.

The Philippines is still at seventh place in the medal tally with eight gold, 12 silver and 25 bronze, while host country Singapore remains at the top spot followed by Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Myanmar. — RSJ, GMA News
