Lee survives acid test, wins women's atomweight title

SINGAPORE- Mixed martial arts veteran Mei Yamaguchi gave Angela Lee the toughest fight of her career yet, but it still wasn't enough to win her the fight after the latter won the inaugural ONE women's atomweight title in the main event of ONE Championship: Ascent to Power, Friday night at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore.

Lee displayed improved striking from the opening bell while Yamaguchi, a karate black belt, took risks by taking the fight to the ground numerous times.

Yamaguchi had her moments, dishing out heavy blows at Lee from ground and pound position and even dropped her for the first time in her career with a right cross in round three.

The championship rounds were spent on the mat where Lee's skillset allowed her to go for various submissions only to see her foe snap out of it.

After five rounds of back and forth action, all three judges scored in favor of Lee, making her the first women's champ at ONE Championship as she improved her record to 6-0 while Yamaguchi fell to 15-9-1. — APG, GMA News
