Jomary Torres says she has to refocus, train harder after Lin Heqin lose

MANILA - Filipina atomweight Jomary Torres is in high spirits but knows she has to quickly get back to the drawing board after her first-round submission defeat against China's Lin Heqin on the undercard of "ONE: Reign of Valor" last Friday at the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar.

Torres successfully went for a takedown after a few exchanges of strikes in round one. But instead of getting the upper hand when she took the bout where she wanted to, the fight went south for Torres as she got locked in a triangle choke.

Torres tried to escape the submission attempt, but the pressure proved too much forcing her to tap at the 4:12 mark of the opening round. The defeat happens to be Torres' third straight loss, dropping her record to 4-3 while Lin moved to 9-2-1.

"After this I have no choice but to train hard so in the next bouts I’ll have a chance to win," said Torres. "Now, there’s a lot of things on my mind and that’s why I wasn’t really focused. But that’s not an excuse, I need to refocus."

Torres was previously regarded as a fast rising prospect in ONE Championship's women's atomweight division. She kicked off her campaign in Asia's top MMA organization with impressive wins over the likes of Rika Ishige and April Osenio of Team Lakay

She lost her way as she tried to reach the top, failing to fulfill the promise of a once fledgling career. Her recent losses however failed to take the best out of Torres, as she vows to come back and start all over again in her quest to reach the pinnacle of the sport.

"I’m still going to train hard. I know that I still have a lot of shortcomings in all of it, striking, grappling and jiu jitsu," Torres admitted. "The loss once again showed me the things that I need to work on moving forward. This is not the end of me, I will be back." — DVM, GMA News
