Fil-Am Coryn Rivera finishes 3rd place in Pru RideLondon Classique 2019
LONDON —Fil-Am Coryn Rivera took 3rd place at the Pru RideLondon Classique Saturday, August 3, after a dramatic finish that saw a number of cyclists crash onto the tarmac.
Two-time defending champion Kirsten Wild thought she had won the race but after a lengthy review that saw her swerve late in the last meters of the 20th lap, Lorena Wiebes of Team Parkhotel Valkenburg was given 1st place and Elisa Balsam of Team Valcar Cylance, 2nd place.
“It’s nice to get my first WorldTour podium this year,” Rivera told reporters after the 20-lap, 68km-criterium race.
“I haven’t raced for a little while now so it’s nice to get back in the swing of things…A win is much sweeter but this is a step to the right direction.”
The Classique is the 16th round for the 2019 Union Cycliste Internationale Women’s WorldTour that saw 16 teams race around St. James’s Park and Constitution Hill.
Wild swerved late in the final sprint, sending a number cyclists behind her tumbling down from one side of the finish to the other, among them Rivera’s team mate and sprint classification winner Susanne Andersen.
“It was pretty hectic. The girls did a pretty good job. Susanne did a great job in the intermediate sprints throughout the entire race…unfortunately, we lost lead with one lap to go,” Rivera said.
