Khabib Nurmagomedov breaks silence, makes first public comment after father’s passing
UFC lightweight world champion Khabib Nurmagomedov broke his silence as he finally made his first public statement following the passing of his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.
Abdulmanap, the father and trainer of the UFC world titleholder and touted the father of mixed martial arts, passed away earlier this month from complications brought upon by COVID-19. He was 57 years old.
“And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], ‘uff,’ and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word,” Nurmagomedov wrote on social media, citing a verse from the Quran.
“And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, ‘My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.’”
Khabib has stayed mum since the tragic passing of his father, who was a driving force behind his success in combat sports. It was a passing felt in the MMA world, and UFC president Dana White said he would allow as much time as Khabib needed to mourn his father’s death.
In the end, Khabib merely wished that his father was proud of the man he had become.
“I will miss you Father, you were a father, a friend, brother and coach in one person,” he wrote in Russian.
