Robert Whittaker outpoints Darren Till, Rua earns split decision over Nogueira
Former UFC middleweight world champion Robert Whittaker is back to his winning ways following a unanimous decision nod over Darren Till in the main event of UFC on ESPN 14 this Sunday at Fight Island in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.
It was back and forth action in round one but it was Till who dictated the tempo and was able to drop the former champ with a left elbow that landed square on the jaw.
Whittaker came to life the following round as he dropped Till with an overhand right then followed up witha ground and pound.
Till came forward in round three while Whittaker was calculated with every strike he threw. A series of hard shots from Till hurt Whittaker in round 4, but the latter was able to recover rather quickly.
Both fighters attempted to sway the scorecards to their favor in round 5 where Till landed a big elbow that opened a cut on Whittaker while the latter scored two takedowns.
After five five-minute rounds, all three judges saw the fight for Whittaker. He improved his record to 21-5 while Till dropped to 18-3.
In the co-main event, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua banked on his leg kicks and takedowns to score a hard-fought split decision victory over fellow Brazilian Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.
SHUT OUT. @ShogunRua ends the trilogy 3-0. #InAbuDhabi @VisitAbuDhabi #UFCFightIsland3
