UFC 252: Cormier had to fight with no vision in his left eye after accidental poke

Former UFC world light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier had to fight with one eye after an accidental poke from Stipe Miocic at the end of round three in the main event of UFC 252 at UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

It was a competitive contest from start to finish but the unintentional eye poke only made things harder for Cormier as he had to fight at a disadvantage during the championship rounds.

Cormier never stopped trying as he threw everything he’s got, but all three judges saw the fight for Miocic after 25 minutes of action to retain his UFC heavyweight world title.

“Look at my eye. I couldn’t see the rest of the fight. I can’t see anything out of my left eye. It’s black. It is what it is. It doesn’t matter,” said Cormier shortly after the fight.

“I told Marc [referee] that he poked me, but he said it was a punch. But then after the fight, he said, ‘Yeah, I saw it on the replay.’ I just can’t see out of my left eye. It doesn’t matter, though. It is what it is.”

The 41-year-old Cormier vowed that he is going to retire from the sport regardless of what happens in his trilogy with Miocic. And even though this was not the exit he wanted for himself, Cormier stuck with his guns and announced that he is done.

“I’m not interested in fighting for anything but titles, and I don’t imagine there’s going to be a title in the future, so that will be it for me,” he stressed.

“I’ve had a long run, it’s been great. I just fought my last fight for a heavyweight championship, and it was a pretty good fight.”
