Geje Eustaquio willing to step aside so Danny Kingad can chase his world title dream
Former ONE flyweight world champion Geje Eustaquio is willing to step aside and give up his dream of another world title run for his teammate Danny Kingad.
Eustaquio proved that he is still on top of his game and a worthy contender following his latest victory over Song Min-jong in the co-main event of ONE: Inside the Matrix III which took place last Nov. 13 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
It was a vintage performance from the ex-champion, one that could put him back in the top 5 rankings of the flyweight division. But if Eustaquio had it his way, he would rather stay out of Kingad’s path to the gold-plated strap.
“I want to see Danny rule the division. I want the young man branded as a champion,” the 31-year-old from Baguio City told GMA News Online.
“If he becomes a world champion then it would make me feel like a three-time world champion. I can even stay outside of the top five and keep the gate closed so he can keep his momentum to the title.”
Kingad, 24, is currently rated the No. 2 contender to the ONE flyweight world title currently held by Adriano Moraes. The current champ has an imminent date with destiny against former UFC flyweight world champion Demetrious Johnson on a yet to be determined date and venue.
Kingad, meanwhile, is scheduled to duke it out with the former champ Kairat Akhmetov on the undercard of ONE: Big Bang on Dec. 4 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. The winner of the contest is likely to get a shot at the ONE flyweight world title next.
“I am praying that he gets past Kairat, that way he will just await the winner between Adriano Moraes and Demetrious Johnson,” said Eustaquio.
Brotherhood runs deep within Team Lakay and there is no way that fans would ever get to see Eustaquio and Kingad go at it inside the cage.
With plenty left in the tank, Eustaquio vowed that he remains ready for anything and everything that comes his way but iterated that his desire to see Kingad become a world champion outweighs his own aspirations.
“Don’t get me wrong, the fire still burns in me to become a world champion again especially that Johnson is here,” he said.
“I am still working on all my arsenal so I am always ready. With that said, I also want to see Danny take the strap and have his time.” – RC, GMA News
