UFC 256: Figueiredo and Moreno battles to a draw, Oliveira dominates Ferguson
UFC flyweight world champion Deiveson Figueiredo and Brandon Moreno delivered what many believe is the greatest fight in UFC flyweight history in the main event of UFC 256 this Sunday at UFC APEX in Las Vegas, USA.
It was a striking contest in the first two rounds as the champion pressed forward while Moreno threw his jabs and overhand right that found its mark in round two.
Figueiredo did well landing his kicks but Moreno was unbothered with his pressure as the challenger managed to score takedowns here and there.
It was a high octane contest until an accidental kick to the groin in round three reduced Moreno to his knees which had cost Figueiredo a point deduction,
Figueiredo seemingly started to fade in round 4 as Moreno took all the hard shots the champ could throw. A hard right hand on top from Moreno managed to stun the champion for the second time in the fight.
Figueiredo was calculated with his strikes towards the end while Moreno took his foot off the gas pedal in the fifth and final round. After five rounds of action, one judge saw the fight 47-46 for Figueiredo while the other two had it as 47-47, ending the contest in a majority draw.
It was Figueiredo’s second title defense in 21 days as he moved his record 20-1-1 while Moreno went 18-5-2.
Meanwhile, former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson duked it out with Charles Oliveira in the co-main event.
The Brazilian came close to getting a submission in the first round, but Ferguson’s unbending will allowed him to fight on as he refused to tap from the kimura.
Though he survived the opening round, Oliveira looked better in every aspect of the fight as he dominated Ferguson until the final bell en route to a unanimous decision. Oliveira improved his record to 30-8-1 while Ferguson dropped to 25-5. — LA, GMA News
