Canelo Alvarez takes super middleweight crown in dominant performance against Callum Smith
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is the new king of the 168-pound division following a dominant performance against Callum Smith to capture the WBC and WBA world super middleweight titles on Sunday at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
It was a battle of jabs and body shots in the early going with both fighters successfully landing their own.
Both Alvarez and Smith unleashed power punches in round two as the Mexican moved forward targeting the head and body.
Alvarez, who also holds the WBA world middleweight title, closed the gap and found his rhythm in round three as he stalked Smith throwing hard shots to the head and body.
The Mexican champion threw bombs which found its mark in round 4. It was all Alvarez from thereon, as he continuously pressed forward hitting the head and body while avoiding Smith's power shots when he throws until the final bell.
All three judges saw the fight for Alvarez after twelve rounds of action, improving his record to 54-1-2 with 36 knockouts while Smith tasted his first defeat as he fell to 27-1 with 19 knockouts. — LA, GMA News
