Paulo Costa offers his excuse why he lost to Israel Adesanya

Nearly six months after they met inside the cage, former world title contender Paulo Costa still can’t seem to accept that he was handily defeated by Israel Adesanya.

The pair of middleweights fought in the main event of UFC 253 where Adesanya won by way of second-round technical knockout to defend his UFC middleweight world title.

In a video posted on his Youtube account, Costa cited that he drank too much before he entered the octagon.

“I was kind of drunk [when] I fought maybe on a hangover,” Costa said in Portuguese.

“I couldn’t sleep because of the [leg] cramps. Keep in mind that the fight happens at 9 AM [local time], we have to wake up at 5 to get ready, stretch, wrap the hands,” he added.

“The UFC told us to wake up at 5 in the morning to go to the arena to fight. I hadn’t slept until 2:30.”

In the end, Costa admitted that he has no one to blame but himself.

“It was my mistake and I don’t blame anyone else. It was something I chose [to do], but, in order to try to sleep, because I had to sleep since I was awake for 24 hours,” he told.

“I had wine, too much wine, a bottle [of wine] to try to blackout. I had a glass and didn’t work. Two glasses, it didn’t work. Half a bottle didn’t work. I had it all.”

Costa, 13-1 as a mixed martial artist, is tasked to face former UFC middleweight world champion Robert Whittaker (22-5) at UFC Fight Night on April 17at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas. — LA, GMA News
