Adriano Moraes gives Demetrious Johnson his first KO loss, Eddie Alvarez disqualified at ONE on TNT
Reigning ONE flyweight world champion Adriano Moraes scored the biggest win of his mixed martial arts career following a second-round stoppage over former UFC flyweight world champion Demetrious Johnson at ONE on TNT this Thursday morning in Singapore.
Johnson pressed forward in the opening round at a high pace exchanging strikes with a composed and calculated Moraes. They eventually went to the mat where the champion scored with his ground and pound.
The fight was going in the same direction the following round until Moraes landed an uppercut that dropped Johnson. He followed up with a knee on top, leaving the American defenseless on the mat that prompted the referee to halt the contest at the 2:24 mark of round two.
It was Moraes’ second successful defense of his title, improving his record to 19-3 while Johnson suffered his first loss by stoppage as he fell to 30-4.
Former Bellator and UFC lightweight world champion Eddie Alvarez also fought on the undercard against #2 rated ONE lightweight Iuri Lapicus.
Alvarez displayed his trademark aggression in the opening minute, going for a takedown then ground and pound only to see the fight halted due to hits to the back of the head of Lapicus. Alvarez contested that it was on the ear, but was shown the red card and disqualified shortly after. —JMB, GMA News
