Conor McGregor celebrates after becoming 2021's highest paid athlete

Former UFC two-division world champion Conor McGregor brought out cake and whiskey to celebrate his top spot on Forbes' list of highest paid athletes in 2021.

The 32-year-old Irish mixed martial arts superstar earned a whopping total of $180 million over the past year. McGregor reportedly made $22 million in his losing effort against Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 257 last January.

The bulk of his riches however came when he sold his majority stake at Proper No. Twelve and endorsements amounting to $158 million.

"Baby we did it! Thank you Forbes for recognizing my role as an entrepreneur! It was a dream to lead this list with so many successful athletes! Onwards and upwards we go," McGregor wrote on Instagram.

Football superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo took the no. 2 and no. 3 spots, having earned $130 million and $120 million respectively.
