Alex Eala reaches singles QF, doubles semis in Italy tilt

Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala moved into the next round in both the singles and doubles draw in the JA Trofeo Bonfiglio tournament in Italy on Thursday.

The No. 1-seeded Eala won her third round match against Russia’s Ksenia Zaytseva, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-5 to advance into the quarterfinals of the singles tournament.

She will play Belgium’s Sofia Costoulas in the quarterfinal round.

Later in the day, Eala would face the same opponent again as the Filipina and her American teammate Madison Sieg defeated Zaytseva and fellow Russian Yaroslava Bartashevich, 6-4, 6-3, to move into the semifinal round in doubles.

Waiting for them in the semis is another Russian pair in No. 5-seed Kira Pavlova and Diana Shnaider. Eala and Sieg are seeded first in the doubles draw.

Eala will play again on Friday as she continues her bid in the tournament.
