Filipino Olympic medalist Leopoldo Serantes passes away at 59

Filipino boxing great and 1988 Seoul Olympics bronze medalist Leopoldo Serantes has passed away. He was 59.

Serantes, who had been battling with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),  was one of eight Filipino boxers to bag a medal for the Philippines in the quadrennial conclave.

During his time at the Olympiad, Serantes competed in the light flyweight while also winning a gold medal in the same division at the 1985 and 1987 editions of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

Serantes was also a Philippine Sports Hall of Famer.

In August, Serantes received a P100,000 monthly allowance from sports patron and Chooks-to-Go president Ronald Mascariñas to help with his hospital bills.

Our condolences to his family. — LA, GMA News
