Third Filipino Paralympian withdraws due to COVID-19

The Philippine Paralympic delegation was dealt another blow after another para athlete contracted COVID-19 to formally withdraw his participation from the quadrennial event.

In a statement Thursday, Philippine Paralympic Committee (PPC) president Michael Barredo bared that Filipino taekwondo jin Allain Ganapin tested positive for the virus and will not be leaving for Japan due to quarantine restrictions.

Ganapin now became the third delegate to get infected by the virus after powerlifter Achelle Guion and discus thrower Jeanette Aceveda, who were also both unable to join their respective competition.

"Allain is upset in missing this opportunity, but prays that this challenge will strengthen in resolve in his later competitions," the statement read.

"The present pandemic has created so many obstacles for our para athletes. The virus has been unforgiving and denied them the chance to bring glory and honor to the Philippines. However, this will not affect their strong resolve and will continue to push forward in the pursuit of their dreams."

Ganapin was supposed to compete in the men's K44-75kg on September 3.
