Alex Eala bows out of 2021 US Open after girls doubles loss in semifinals

Alex Eala wrapped up her 2021 US Open campaign following a semifinals exit in the girls doubles event at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Saturday morning (Manila time).

The Filipina tennis sensation and her Belgian partner Hanne Vandewinkel fell to the American tandem of Elvina Kalieva and Reese Brantmeier, 7-5, 2-6, 7-10, to formally bow out of contention in the final Grand Slam event of the year.

The clash lasted for only an hour and nine minutes.

Earlier, Eala and Vandewinkel bested USA bets Madison Sieg and Elizabeth Coleman in the quarterfinal round, 6-1, 6-7, 10-7, to move on to the next round.

With her latest defeat, Eala officially ended her campaign in the US Open as she already concluded her singles bid after a quarterfinal loss to Sebastianna Scilipoti on Friday.

The 16-year-old Eala, a Rafa Nadal Academy scholar, currently has two Grand Slam titles under her belt after ruling the girls doubles event of both the 2020 Australian Open and the 2021 French Open. —JCB, GMA News
