Charles Oliveira submits Dustin Poirier to defend UFC world title

UFC lightweight world champion Charles Oliveira successfully defended his title for the first time following a third-round submission over Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 269 this Sunday (Manila time) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, USA.

It was a high octane fight from the get-go as Poirier repeatedly landed his left straight while Oliveira threw the knee to the body that also found its mark. Oliveira pushed the pace but was made to pay for it after he ate a right hook that dropped him.

Oliveira pressed Poirier to the side of the cage in the opening seconds of round two. They scrambled and ended on the mat where the Brazilian mounted Poirier and unleashed hard elbows that managed to the challenger.

Oliveira immediately took Poirier's back the following round and did not let go until he locked a standing rear-naked choke that forced a tap at the 1:02 mark of round three. The win improved Oliveira’s record to 32-8 while Poirier fell to 28-7.
