EJ Obiena clears 5.91m in French tiff to set new personal best in indoor pole vault

Filipino Olympian and Asian pole vault record holder EJ Obiena recorded a new personal best in indoor pole vault after clearing the 5.91-meter mark in the Perche Elite Tour in Rouen, France.

After clearing the first three bars in just one attempt, Obiena needed three to clear the 5.81m mark. He then skipped the 5.86m mark before needing just one attempt to clear the 5.91m mark.

He skipped the 5.96m mark and went straight to the 6.01m mark, but failed to clear it in three attempts.

Obiena placed second in the competition behind American Christopher Nilsen who cleared his best attempt at 6.05m. Brazil's Thiago Braz, who also cleared the 5.91m mark, placed third due to countback.

For this indoor season, Obiena recently had two title wins where he cleared 5.81 meters.

Obiena's new record came days after the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association refused to endorse the pole vaulter to major international competitions citing non-completion of mediation procedures. The refusal was criticized by the Philippine Olympic Committee.
