Dustin Poirier responds to Colby Covington: 'He should fight welterweight contenders'
Former UFC interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier is not keen on fighting Colby Covington.
Covington, a former UFC interim welterweight champion, called out Poirier shortly after beating Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
“It's cute. It's all good it is what it is. People want big fights, that's a big fight, he wants a big fight,” Poirier said in an interview with ESPN.
“Obviously he is not in line for a title fight, he lost twice to the champion so he probably needs a few more wins. If he wants to get back to that strap, he has to fight welterweight contenders.”
Covington is currently ranked as the no.1 contender in the UFC’s welterweight division but has already lost twice to the reigning champion Kamaru Usman.
Poirier, meanwhile, failed in his attempt to become a champion when he was defeated by UFC lightweight world champion Charles Oliveira last December.
The UFC and Poirier are yet to reveal what’s next for the Louisiana native though the prizefighter iterated his desire to face fan-favorite Nate Diaz.
“I don't what I am doing. I don't know if I am going to welterweight or if I am staying at 155. We'll see,” Poirier said.
“Nate Diaz is a fight I want. I have been watching him and his brother forever so it is exciting for me and the matchup would be fun for the fans. That is more likely than the Colby fight.”
