UFC fighter Kevin Holland subdues Houston shooter with a choke
UFC fighter Kevin Holland made good use of his martial arts training to subdue a shooter in Houston on Monday night (Texas time), ESPN reported.
Holland, who holds a record of 22-7 as a mixed martial arts fighter, was reportedly eating sushi with his friend Patrick Robinson when he heard gunshots followed by people running away in fear.
The American mixed martial arts fighter saw another man trying to wrestle the gun away from the shooter so he and Robinson rushed to the scene to disarm the suspect.
"I wouldn't tell the next person to do it unless they're seriously trained for that type of situation," said Holland.
"Besides doing cage fighting, I train self-defense first and foremost. For me, that was the best way to defend myself at the moment. Plus, I like Batman."
According to several reports, the suspect, who has been identified as 24-year-old Jesus Samaniego, pulled a gun and opened fire in a restaurant that had 50 people inside.
Holland, 29, approached the scene then locked the suspect into a rear-naked choke until it was lights out and subdued the shooter while waiting for the police to arrive.
"As soon as he was [asleep], I let go of the choke, slid out on top, got full mount, and stretched the arms out so he couldn't reach for anything," Holland said.
The suspect is now facing charges of deadly conduct and unlawfully carrying a weapon.
