Demetrious Johnson would run if needed to survive Rodtang in special rules match at ONE:X
Former UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson would not shy away from running if that is what it would take to survive Muay Thai champion Rodtang Jitmuangnon.
The pair of flyweights are scheduled to figure in a special rules match on Saturday, March 26, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium where the bout would be fought in both Muay Thai and MMA rules for four three-minute rounds.
"I mean it is Rodtang so I have to. I really do not have a choice, right?" Johnson answered when asked if he would run in order to survive the Muay Thai specialist.
"It is something that we know that we are getting ourselves into, we prepared very well for this fight and feel very confident in my training and skill set and teammates."
The one-of-a-kind special rules showdown between two legends of their respective disciplines will be fought in Muay Thai rules in rounds 1 and 3 while rounds 2 and 4 will see them compete in a mixed martial arts ruleset.
While it is more than obvious that Johnson's best path to victory is to get a submission, he also said that he would do whatever it takes to win the fight even if it means trading strikes with Rodtang.
"I am coming to fight. I am not a Muay Thai fighter, in case you guys have not noticed. For me I have to come out there and be elusive, fast, strategic, and use my IQ," Johnson said.
"At the end of the day, Rodtang gets hit. He welcomes to get hit. That is his style, he will take five and give you two. That would be his only flaw, he gets hit but he can take it so I do not know if that is a flaw or not."
