Is RSG's Light the best roamer in MPL Philippines?
After topping the regular season standings, RSG Philippines did not let up in their first play off match in Season 9 with a dominant showing against M3 World Championship runner-up Onic Philippines.
The team completed a 3-0 sweep, thanks to the heroics of Regular Season MVP Dylan "Light" Catipon. This begs the question: is Light the best roamer in the MPL right now?
Coach Brian "Panda" Lim is very much proud of his prized roamer and considers him a part of a rare breed of players with high gaming IQ that has been in full display all season long.
"Light is one of the very few players, not only in PH pero kahit sa ibang bansa, who has a very good timing to know when you play aggressive [or] when you play defensive," he said.
In the close out game against Onic Philippines, Light's performance articulated these remarks from Coach Panda as he keyed the RSG's fightback, who battled deep from a 10k net worth deficit before a massive reverse in the late game.
He first combined with Arvie "Aquaaa" Calderon (Cecillon) in a 13th minute defensive stand with a superb Fatal Links set-up that resulted in a crucial pick off on Onic's Mark Christian "Markyyyyy" Capacio (Natan), helping RSG fend off the final base turret push.
"Nag-aantay lang ako ng timing. Lagi ko silang nire-remind na kaya namin 'to. Si Aqua palagi siyang nakakagawa ng play. Napapa-purify niya si Markkyy tapos ifa-follow-up ko," said Light of his mindset in the lead up for the turn around play.
With the pivotal 2-0 wipe resulting from Light's set-up play, he once again delivered another decisive Fatal Links execution on Allen "Baloyskie" Baloy (Franco) and Jaylord "Hatred" Gonzales (Grock) that crippled Onic's final base turret defense for the sweep.
Asked if he thinks he is currently the best MPL PH roamer after getting the regular season MVP and his current playoff performance, Light humbly deflects the praise.
"Kung tingin ng iba ako 'yung pinakamagaling, thank you," he said with a laugh.
"Pero para sa akin si Hadji (ang pinakamagaling na roamer). Sobrang ganda kasi ng mechanical skills niya pero unti-unti naman ita-try ko siyang higitan," he added.
With the win, RSG will now face TNC in the next round to dispute a spot in the Season 9 grand finals and a ticket to the MSC 2021. As a former member of TNC in Season 9, Light is already looking forward to the match and is confident RSG will continue with their stellar play.
"Feeling ko masarap sila (TNC) kalaban. S'yempre hindi ako magpapatalo sa kanila," he said.
