Sam Catantan, women's foil team settle for silver in SEA Games; PH wrestling bets bag bronze

After copping an individual gold, fencing ace Sam Catantan helped steer the national team to a silver medal finish in the women's team foil event of the 31st Southeast Asian Games on Tuesday at the Hanoi Indoor Game Palace.

The national team lost to Singapore in their gold medal match, 28-33, to wind up second. Cantantan, who ruled the women's fencing individual foil event last Saturday, was joined by Wilhelmina Lozada, Justine Gail Tinio, and Maxine Esteban.

Prior to the finals, the quartet dominated Thailand in their semifinal clash earlier today, 45-26.

Another bronze medal, this time from sepak takraw, added to the Philippines' medal haul after the team of Jason Huerte, Rheyjey Ortouste, Ronsted Gabayeron, Mark Joseph Gonzales, and John John Bobier racked up the third place in men’s regu event.

Meanwhile, wrestlers also collected medals in the biennial meet. Jefferson Manatad claimed a silver in the men's greco roman 87kg, while three Filipino wrestlers bagged bronze medals as Noel Norada finished third in the men's greco roman 67kg event. His compatriot, Margarito Angana Jr., also captured the bronze in the men's greco roman 60kg, while Jason Balabal also had one in the men's greco roman 97 kg.
