Sergey Lipinets steps in for Adrien Broner, battles Figueroa in eliminator

Former IBF world light welterweight champion Sergey Lipinets has stepped in for Adrien Broner after the latter pulled out from his August 21 (Philippine time) bout against Omar Figueroa Jr. at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Florida, USA.

Broner, a former four-division world champion, pulled out of the Figueroa fight citing mental health issues.

Despite his absence, Showtime decided to push through with the event as scheduled.

“Former champ Sergey Lipinets steps into battle [against] Omar Figueroa Jr. in a WBC 140-lb title eliminator this Saturday after Adrien Broner announced his withdrawal from the fight,” Showtime announced on Facebook.

Lipinets, 16-2-1 with 12 knockouts as a prizefighter, last saw action in April 2021 against Jaron Ennis where he lost by way of knockout. He last won a fight in 2019 when he defeated Filipino journeyman Jay Ar Inson via second-round technical knockout. — LA, GMA News
