Alex Eala barges into US Open girls singles semis with rout of doubles partner
Alex Eala cruised to her best US Open girls singles finish so far, eliminating Mirra Andreeva in a dominant fashion, 6-4, 6-0, during their quarterfinals bout on early Friday (Manila time) at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, United States.
The 17-year-old Filipina netter committed just two double faults while forcing her Russian foe to five. Eala, who made it to the quarterfinals stage of US Open's previous edition, also had two aces to complete the easy victory.
Eala now moved within two wins away from securing her first-ever singles Grand Slam crown.
She will be facing ninth seed Victoria Mboko of Canada in the semis slated for Saturday morning.
The young tennis sensation is looking to add to her two Grand Slam junior doubles titles—the 2020 Australian Open and the 2021 French Open.
It was a bittersweet win for Eala, though, as she booted out Andreeva, her partner in the doubles play. The Filipina-Russian tandem, though, bowed out of contention after a walkover was given to the German duo of Carolina Kuhl and Ella Seidel.
