Carlos Yulo finishes 8th in men's all-around finals of world championships

Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo finished eighth in the men's all-around finals of the 2022 World Gymnastics Championships in Liverpool, United Kingdom on Saturday morning (Manila time).

Yulo got off to a hot start, notching 15.166 in his pet event floor exercise built on 6.400 in difficulty and 8.766 in execution before he got 11.900 on the pommel horse to drop to 12th place in the standings after the second rotation.

The Filipino wunderkind then received 13.500 at the rings on 5.700 and 7.800 in difficulty and execution, respectively, before it was changed to 13.800. Yulo had a tough outing at the vault, but still got 14.166 on that rotation to go up at seventh spot.

Yulo further strengthened his medal bid with an impressive 15.166 finish in the parallel bars to climb back to sixth spot at the end of the penultimate rotation.

But he could not sustain his momentum, finishing his last rotation with an 11.900 output in the horizontal bar to bow out of contention with a final score of 82.098.

Daiki Hashimoto of Japan claimed the gold medal with 87.198 while Boheng Zhang settled for silver after an 86.765 finish. Another Japanese bet in Wataru Tanigawa bagged the bronze after collecting 85.231.

The 22-year-old Yulo was the third best athlete in the qualifying round last Tuesday, collecting a total of 84.664 behind Tanigawa and Hashimoto. -- BAP, GMA News
