Alexandra "Alex" Eala will formally open her campaign in the 2026 Italian Open opposite Poland's Magdalena Frech in the Round of 128.

The 20-year-old Eala, who exited in the first round of this same tournament last year, will aim for a deeper run as she faces world No. 45 Frech, a third-round finisher in the 2025 edition.

The Italian Open, a WTA1000 event, will serve as Eala's fourth tournament in the clay-court swing this year.

Eala had a Round of 16 exit at the Linz Open with a loss to Jelena Ostapenko before bowing to Leylah Fernandez in the Round of 32 of the Stuttgart Open. Recently, she absorbed a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Elise Mertens in the Madrid Open Round of 64.

Eala is now hoping to turn her fortunes in the prestigious Italian Open, a tournament that was ruled by several stars in the past like Jasmine Paolini in 2025, Elena Rybakina in 2023, and Iga Swiatek in 2021, 2022, and 2024.

This will also be the first time Eala and Frech will face off in the WTA tour.

If Eala gets past the Polish opponent, she will take on 31st seed Xinyu Wang in the next round.
