Alexandra "Alex" Eala faces a challenging start in her second stint at the Italian Open as she takes on Polish star Magdalena Frech in the Round of 128 tentatively set on Wednesday in Rome, Italy.

Unfamiliarity will be a factor as the two have never faced each other on the WTA Tour. Their opening-round clash in Rome will serve as their first introduction, adding an element of unpredictability to the matchup.

Frech is a 28-year-old veteran currently ranked world No. 45, having previously climbed to a career-high of No. 22 in October 2024. She owns one WTA singles title, which came at the WTA 500 Guadalajara Open in 2024, where she captured her maiden crown after defeating Olivia Gadecki in the final.

Like Eala, Frech is also coming off a stint at the Madrid Open, where the two were on course to potentially face each other had they both advanced to the Round of 16.

But Eala lost to Elise Mertens in the Round of 64, 6-2, 6-1, while Frech fell to Solana Sierra in the same round, 6-2, 6-4 as both the Filipina and Polish bets bowed out of contention.

Frech is also looking to redeem herself in the tournament after falling short last year, despite having a deep run. Frech earned an opening-round bye then pulled off a 7-5, 6-4 win over Victoria Azarenka in the next round, but she crashed out of the event with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Zheng Qinwen in the Round of 32.
