EJ Obiena captures silver in Germany tilt

EJ Obiena returned to the field in style, seizing a silver medal in the Flight Circus Düsseldorf on Sunday to open his 2026 outdoor season.

The 30-year-old Filipino pole vault ace cleared 5.74 meters after two tries to finish second behind champion Chris Nilsen of USA, who soared past 5.83 meters to claim the gold.

Obiena cleared both 5.50 and 5.65 meters and had to jump twice to clear the next height at 5.74m.

The two-time Olympian still tried to make it past 5.83m and 5.9, but fell short to settle for the silver.

Qatar’s Seifeldin Abdelsalam claimed the bronze by registering 5.65 meters.

Obiena last saw action in March at the World Athletics Indoor Championship, where he ended up in ninth.
