Alex Eala ends stellar Berlin Tennis Open run with semis loss to Linda Noskova
Alexandra "Alex" Eala's stellar campaign at the Berlin Tennis Open came to an unfortunate end after the Filipina bowed to Linda Noskova, 6-2, 6-4, in their rain-delayed semifinal match on Saturday in Germany.
The loss punctuated Eala's impressive campaign that saw her upset world No. 2 Elena Rybakina in the Round of 16 before ousting world No. 8 Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals.
Noskova advanced to the seventh final of her career and her first on grass, where she will face Jessica Pegula for the title. Pegula booked her spot in the championship match after stunning world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the other semifinal earlier on Saturday.
"I just had to adjust my game today, maybe a little bit because of the rain and maybe the temperature dropped a little bit," Noskova said.
"But as the match went on and we had new balls, I kind of started to feel better and better. It was coming more naturally."
Noskova came out firing by establishing a 5-2 advantage in the first set after taking advantage of an errant forehand from Eala.
The eighth seed looked poised to close out the set when she unleashed an ace for a 40-0 lead in the eighth game.
Eala showed resistance by winning the next two points, but the Czech star responded with a forehand winner to wrap up the opener, 6-2.
Noskova once again established an early separation in Set 2 with a 3-1 cushion, but the Philippine bet mounted a huge comeback and seized the next four games to create a 4-3 lead.
However, Eala was unable to sustain the momentum as Noskova clawed her way back to level things at 4-all before seizing control late. The Czech eventually broke the deadlock in the ninth game and closed out the set at 6-4 to complete the win over the Filipina.
Noskova never looked back and completed Eala's ouster to advance to the finals, where she is pitted against the veteran and multi-titled Pegula.
