'What's it like to be Filipino?' Alex Eala highlights Filipino pride after DC Open victory

Already regarded as one of the most followed tennis stars in recent years, Alexandra “Alex” Eala made sure to shine the spotlight on the Filipino community after her first-round match at the DC Open on Tuesday (early Wednesday, Philippine time).

The Filipino community in Washington, D.C., showed its support during Eala’s clash with former world No. 4 and 2024 Paris Olympics gold medalist Zheng Qinwen of China, where the Filipina ace rallied to secure a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory.

During the on-court interview, Eala was asked, “What is it like to be this popular everywhere around the world, even here in Washington?”

“I think the question should be rephrased as, ‘What’s it like to be Filipino?’” Eala said.

“Salamat, mga kababayan.”

Eala also expressed her appreciation for the support she received from the Filipino community in D.C.

“I think the community here in D.C. is amazing. I think there was a great atmosphere for both players, and I’m really happy with my win today,” she added.

Eala will face Leylah Fernandez, whose mother is Filipino-Canadian, in the next round.
